a man with classes looks at the cameraProfessor Tuomas Aura will be the new Director of HAIC starting 1.1.2024. Tuomas has a long history in information security research and teaching. Before joining Aalto University in 2008, he worked for Microsoft Research for nine years in the UK. His research interests are related to user privacy, network protocols and distributed systems. Tuomas is the Programme Director of the security master’s programmes at Aalto University and invests a lot in teaching and student supervision. Tuomas collaborates actively with the local infosec industry and has potential to foster the highly valued industry contacts during studies that help especially foreign students to find internship positions and enter Finnish job market after graduation.

‘The essential function of HAIC has been to bring together researchers, students, and industry so that we have opportunities to exchange views on cybersecurity, create contacts, and help students find their place in the field,’ Tuomas says. ‘I look forward to seeing everyone at HAIC events in the new year.’

Professor Janne Lindqvist’s four-year director term is coming to an end. Nevertheless, Janne will stay in close contact with HAIC and we can expect to see him attending the annual Secure Systems Demo Days and the popular HAIC Talks.

‘I am proud to have steered HAIC for the past four years. We have a fantastic community of security folks at Aalto and with our industry partners, and I look forward to stay in touch with everybody while I focus on my duties as the Head of the largest and most beautiful academic department in Finland,’ Janne says.

If you are interested in studying information security, apply now! Application period for the master’s programmes at Aalto University and the University of Helsinki is open until the beginning of January (see our previous post).
