Russell Lai started as an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science in July 2022. This autumn he is teaching in the CS cryptography course with professor Chris Bruzska.
Russell Lai is a cryptography researcher, who wants to bring the fruits of his academic work to the use of everyday citizens, without sacrificing robustness. Some concrete examples are Russell’s work on password-hardening, that has been integrated into identity management systems by the industry. Another one of his research projects on anonymous cryptocurrencies established theoretical foundations of the security of Monero – one of the most traded anonymous cryptocurrencies – and has influenced the development of other cryptocurrencies. Recently, he has been working in collaboration with Protocol Labs on post-quantum-secure succinct argument systems.
